Growing up shedding so many physical and musical skins – from goth and metal to electro and techno – that it’s fair to say her music and energy is a real amalgamation of all of these things and much more. As we write this, she’s DJing in Ibiza with Josh Wink as a resident for Cosmic Pineapple at Pikes but just two days earlier she was spinning a peak-time set as part of her residency for The Zoo Project. “Ibiza is where I found myself,” she explains. “Going in the deep end and doing a season was life-changing for my relationship with myself. The energy and the way people live is unmatched anywhere in the world. People are there for different reasons but the island is so condensed with people in love with the music and lifestyle. You don’t need to care what people think, you can be 100% yourself and won’t be judged for it.” Growing up in Dublin, Cici was a fine arts student, absorbing everything from classic Bjork to Nine Inch Nails. But at college, she started Djing and booking heavy metal bands and punk bands to play, which indirectly lead her to genre-blending musicians like Justice. “We played a lot of French electro and then that evolved into techno. I remember going to see Ricardo Villalobos and Richie Hawtin and Ricardo played this track by Butch called ‘Rawhide’ and it blew my mind. The energy was primal and tribal and I realised that’s what I wanted to do forever and that I would throw myself into it.” Now living and working on her debut EP in London and about to make her debut at Fabric (“London is cutting-edge across all of the arts and Fabric was the first club I went to here and still the most important to me”), you can expect the first fruits of that new music to drop later in 2018. Anyone who’s heard Cici play will know what to expect: a passion for house and techno from Mr G and Roman Flugel (“a huge influence’) to Octave One and ItaloJohnson, who personally asked her to warm up for them at Pickle Factory. Apart from playing Fabric this August, probably the biggest buzz so far.” Like Josh Wink, Cici is a thing of wonder. The difference, of course, is that she’s really only just getting started.
